What to expect…

Counselling is often called `talking therapy’, essentially a conversation between two people. It differs from a normal chat in the fact that the therapist is trained to help you deal with your life issues, to resolve them and to help you avoid them in the future. It is a confidential space to share, to explore and sometimes to unload your emotions and thoughts. A safe space to make sense of the world, yourself, your emotions.

There are many different approaches, some therapists work more with behaviours, some with relationships, and some delve more into the past and some the future.

The British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy describes the key elements of the process as

  • Service provided when you wish to make changes in your life.
  • An opportunity to make sense of your individual circumstances.
  • Contact with a therapist who helps identify the choices for change.
  • Support for the individual during their process of change.
  • The end result leaving you better equipped to cope for the future.

Why do it…

The desired effect is that you leave counselling with a greater understanding of your situation or self and that you have been able to make the changes in your life that you want. Depending on your situation some of these may also apply, a sense of being back in control, able to get on with life, happier and more content.
