The term “addiction” is often associated with “substance addiction”, which is when people are dependant on drugs such as alcohol, cocaine and nicotine.  Experts also recognize that it is possible to become addicted to an activity or process, including some everyday tasks. Common “process addictions” are gambling, relationships, work, shopping and sexual activity.

Everyone is addicted to something, to some extent, at some point in there life.  Whenever we engage in an activity with the intention of avoiding painful feelings, we can be using that activity as an addiction.  We can use anything as a way of avoiding how we feel and to avoid taking responsibility for those feelings.  Anything can be an addiction, depending on our intention.

It is when our behavior starts to have negative consequences or we lose your ability to control it that the search for answers begins. There is help for those who want to get their life back on track.
